Røros Mining Town

This colourful and charming timber town was founded in 1646 and has since developed as both a mining and an agricultural community. Included on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites as early as 1980, the town centre boasts a rare collection of large and well-preserved wooden buildings, made all the more real and authentic by the fact that the people of today live and work in them. Join a guided walking tour in Røros, visit the Røros Church and the Rørosmuseum or the Olavsgruva Mine, and get to know our history.

Røros Church

‘Bergstadens Ziir’ – better known as Røros Church – was built during the copperwork’s golden age ‘in God’s honour and as an adornment to the town. The church, which was completed in 1784, does justice to its name with its majestic location high above the timber buildings. The Directorate for Cultural Heritage regards the church as one of the ten most profiled churches in Norway. It is one of the country’s largest churches with seating for 1,600 people. The church has been extensively renovated in recent years and restored to its former glory.

Rørosmuseum Smelthytta

The ‘Smelthytta’ museum is built on top of the ruins of the smelter hut that burnt down in 1975. The exhibitions are linked to the history of Røros Copperworks, brought alive through models of mines, smelter huts and technical equipment used at the time. Another exhibition shows fine period dress from the 19th century Røros.
