Status as a national park village
Vingelen has the status of a national park village, a title that only four other places in Norway can boast. This type of village environment is unique in Norway, as is this living mountain farm culture. The term “national park village” was employed for the first time by the Norwegian Ministry of the Environment to bolster development in the areas around heritage sites. The four other national park villages are Fossbergom (in Lom), Geilo, Jondal and Storslett.
Forollhogna National Park
Vingelen national park village is situated far to the east in Tolga municipality, and serves as a natural entrance to the Forollhogna national park. The park is an unspoiled mountainous area with gently sloping valleys and hills, and is known for fostering the largest reindeer stags in Norway. The park is surrounded by lush mountain valleys and protected cultural landscapes. The highest point is the Forollhogna mountain, at 1332 metres above sea level. It is this mountan which has lent its name to the park.
