The open landscape in Røros is well suited for cycling. 333 years worth of mining in the area have left innumerable roads and tracks to use. Here are some suggestions.

The Mining Trail

Experience the mining areas in the mountains.
From Hyttelva the trail takes you to the Storwartz mines, where the local industry had its origins. There are ten differents mines in this area, with continuous mining from 1645 until 1970. There are many clues as to what kind of industry you could find here: mining roads, rock heaps, dams and water pipes. You can visit the Olav mine with a guide, with several daily tours in summer. There is a slight rise towards Storwartz. The road is in generally good condition however some parts being just gravel tracks.
Track type: normal
Distance: 37 kilometres round-trip

Falkbergets Kingdom

Experience Kongens Gruve and the home of Johan Falkberget.
The trip takes you from the centre of Røros to Arvedals and Kongens gruve (gruve = mine), to the home of Johan Falkberget at Ratvolden. It is in this area you find the last mines that were operational in the Røros Copper Company. Production was halted in 1977, and here you’ll find Rødalen mine, Fjellsjøgruva, Lergruvebakken, Christianus Sextus, Muggruva, Kongens gruve and Arvedalslinja. At the end of Arvedalslinja you get to Rugldalen, where the author and poet Johan Falkberget lived. Falkberget himself used to work at the mines, and wrote extensively about his experiences in his novels. Parts of the track are on roads, carriage ways and proper trails. There is a slight rise towards Kongens gruve. We recommend using an off- road bike.
Track type: normal
Distance: either 45 kilometers or a 30 kilometers round-trip

Femund National Park

Experience the Femund National Park and the surrounding mountains.
The trip takes you from the centre of Røros along Hådalsveien to Synnervika. This part of the track is an easy ride, on solid roads. From the quay at Synnervika you can take the old post ship to Femundshytten or Jonasvolden, where you can spend the night if needed. The trip with the old post ship is highly recommended, with a great view of Femund National Park. From Femundshytten or Jonasvolden you can continue on to Tufsingdalen and Grådalen, before you return to Røros. Proper roads most of the time to Tufsingdalen and parts of Grådalen.
Track type: normal
Distance: 110 kilometres round-trip
